The primary functions of the Illinois State Geological Survey Library are to provide information and collect materials to support ISGS research programs and to collect materials on Illinois geology. The ISGS Library consists of two components: the Stacks and the Map Room. The Map Room collection is available to the public for in-house use only. The more than 25,000 maps housed in the Map Room include topographic maps of Illinois and surrounding states, U.S. Geological Survey map series, and other published and unpublished maps of Illinois, including work maps for ISGS publications. Our special collections contain original field notes, some indexed; aerial photographs of Illinois including annual oversize aerial photos of the Lake Michigan shoreline beginning in 1956; historical photographs of research projects and staff; videos; and slides. We also have a photograph collection.

All map titles appear in the online catalog. Special collection materials added since 1990 are also included in the online catalog. Work is ongoing to add older special collection titles.

Questions, comments, and suggestions should be directed to the Library of the Illinois State Geological Survey.
