The primary functions of the State Geological Survey Library
are to provide information and collect materials to support Survey research
programs, and to collect materials on Illinois
geology. Our collection is available to the public for use in-house and through
Interlibrary Loan. The ISGS library consists of two components: the stacks and
the map room. The main focus of the ISGS Library collection is Illinois geology.
Subject areas collected in the stacks include geology, geophysics,
geochemistry, paleontology, energy and fuels, stratigraphy, mines and minerals,
hydrogeology, and environmental geology. Included in the collection are
documents, special collections, and books. Documents include a large collection
of reports and serials issued by state geological surveys, U.S. Geological
Survey, Bureau of Mines, and other federal agencies, Canadian geological
surveys, publications of other agencies of the State of Illinois, and a complete collection of ISGS
publications. Special collections include manuscript collection, thesis
collection and database of theses on Illinois
geology, vertical file, microforms, and a Superconducting Super Collider archive and database. Books include over 4000
titles covering related subject areas.
The online library catalog includes all titles collected since 1990, and
selected titles collected prior to 1990. All Illinois State Geological Survey publications,
regardless of date, are in the online catalog. Work is ongoing to add older
titles to the online catalog.
Questions, comments, and suggestions should be directed to the Library of
the Illinois State Geological Survey.
